Visiting Woody

The Woody Guthrie Center in Tulsa is about much more than this dustbowl-era troubadour. It's a history of Oklahoma, and the U.S. for that matter, channeled through the life of one of America's most popular folk singers. If you'd ask me beforehand, I knew two facts about Guthrie: he sang "This Land is Your Land", and he was born in Okemah. The Center slowly discloses the rich texture of his story as an author, sketcher, painter, activist and prolific songwriter. The space is well designed containing a depth of content without being overwhelmingly tedious or academic—kind of like Woody. I highly recommend a visit.
